Shri Abhayanand Interview by Prakash Jha

Abhayanand to take over as Bihar DGP today

ADG (training) Abhayanand, the policeman who gave the Nitish Kumar government successful policing initiatives — like speedy trial and formation of Special Auxiliary Police from among retired Army officers — will take over as Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) on Wednesday.
A 1977 batch IPS officer and the physics teacher of the Super-30 fame, he will take over from Neelmani at a special ceremony here.
Compared to some of his immediate predecessors, Abhayanand is likely to have a longer stint as the state police chief since he will retire in December 2014. His father Jagdanand had also held the post of Bihar DGP and had retired in 1986.
In the past six years, over 60,000 accused have been convicted because of the speedy trial initiative that works on the principle of police stations ensuring presence of all witnesses in courts rather than just filing chargesheets.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Abhayanand said: “Taking over as DGP is a great honour but I am alive to the big task ahead. It will be too early to outline my priorities. I will try to understand economics of policing and find out good solutions to problems.”

Bihar DGP-designate Abhyanand on Monday inaugurated the department of BSc Mathematics Honours at the Patna Women's College (PWC).

PATNA: Bihar DGP-designate Abhyanand on Monday inaugurated the department of BSc Mathematics Honours at the Patna Women's College(PWC).
"Mathematics is not a subject but a language. It is a vehicle that carries our thoughts," Abhyanand said while appreciating the efforts of PWC management to start this course.
Patna University's dean, students welfare, Dr P K Poddar said that it largely depended on teachers to make mathematics interesting for the learners. "Students should take utmost advantage of the course," he said.
PWC decided to start this course as demand for it was increasing year after year. The decision was taken in June 2011, and the university's academic council approved the move in July this year. A total of 50 seats have been sanctioned for BSc Mathematics Honours.
"A total of 32 students have already taken admission to the course and only 18 seats are vacant," said principal Sister Doris D'Souza.

Abhayanand : New DGP - Bihar

Abhayanand : New DGP - Bihar

Iron will made them defy hurdles put up by fate

NEW DELHI: Living in a dingy one-room flat in Kotla Mubarakpur, 18-year-old Shivangi only dreamt about making ends meet with her mother's meagre income. After her father, who sold vegetables in Kidwai Nagar, passed away last year it became even more challenging for Shivangi to focus on studies. On Wednesday, her life completely changed. Much to the delight of her mother, Shivangi had cracked the IIT JEE under the reserved category.
"I owe everything to my mother and her efforts. She has always supported me and encouraged me to study further," said Shivangi while Sheela Devi planned to cook her daughter's favourite matar-paneer to celebrate her success. After scoring 90% in CBSE class XII exams last year, Shivangi decided to drop a year and prepare for engineering entrance exams. She was then selected by a PSU, Indraprastha Gas Limited, that sponsored her IIT coaching in collaboration with the co-founder of Super-30 Patna, Abhyanand. Shivangi ranked 600 in her category.

Abhayanand invited to set Model Papers

Online common entrance to check aptitude, general awareness and comprehensive written skills

The Bihar School Examination Board on Monday started its two-day workshop for preparing model papers for classes XI and XII.

More than 40 teachers from across the state, including three officials from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) were present at the workshop.

The workshop has been designed for making students acquainted with the examination pattern of next year’s Class XII board examination.

Bihar School Examination Board Chairman A.K.P. Yadav said: “The workshop has been organised for preparing model papers for the Class XII examination.” The participants at the workshop, mostly experts in mathematics, physics and chemistry, have been asked to frame questions while taking into consideration IIT and other engineering examinations.

The Bihar School Examination Board decision to this effect has been taken after the Union ministry of human resources development recently prepared a draft recommendation suggesting a common entrance examination for Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and other engineering colleges.

Based on common entrance examination which will consist of a National Aptitude Test and marks scored in the Class XII examination, students would be given admission at IIT and other engineering colleges.

The workshop would continue on Tuesday too after which the model papers would be made available to students by the end of September.

The model paper would cover all aspects of IIT and other engineering colleges entrance examinations.

The board had invited Abhayanand of Super 30 coaching institutes which had created a niche in IIT entrance examination and CBSE professors and teachers from New Delhi for setting the model papers.

The Union HRD draft recommendations has suggested a single National Aptitude Test.

The test, which would be conducted online, would comprise questions on aptitude, raw intelligence, common awareness and comprehensive written skills.

In the entrance process to IIT and engineering colleges, one-third (33 per cent) of marks would be taken from National Aptitude Test, while two-thirds (66 per cent) marks scored in Class XII would be given weightage.

Mr Abhayanand — the IPS officer who helped Mr Kumar set up the institute and who parted ways with him recently — declared the list of students of coaching institutes with which he is now associated prior to the announcement of results. “It would not be fair for me to comment on others who declare the list of successful candidates only after results. I made available the entire list of students before the results. I am associated with five institutes in the state capital and in some other districts. Out of the 89 students I coached and whose lists I had furnished prior the announcement of the results, 20 students had made it to IIT-JEE.”

The Muslims of North India for historical reasons have not had very friendly relations with the local police. I was in Patna visiting Rahmani-30 when Abhayanand, Additional Director General of Police makes a visit in his official car. Rahmani-30 is set up on the pattern of Bihar Super-30 which is a successful experiment to pick and train 30 students from poor economic background and prepare them for entrance exam of famous Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Abhyanand waits while group of twenty odd Muslim students finish their afternoon prayers (Asr). These students have recently appeared for the class tenth exams and selected to Rahmani-30 after an entrance test and an interview. Entrance test was held in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal – clearly a sign of increasing popularity of the institution that is barely a year old.

Rahmani-30

A year ago, Maulana Wali Rahmani, Sajjada Nasheen of Khanqah Rahmaniya, Munger and Secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board requested Abhayanand to help him set up Rahmani-30. Abhayanand was associated with Super-30 and readily agreed to the idea. The dearth of good quality students led them to start another batch of students who had just finished their tenth. So that they can be given quality education for two years and that way more students can be ready for the tough entrance exams of IITs (IIT-JEE).

I was visiting the institution just three days before the results of IIT-JEE were to be announced. No one could have imagined that all ten students would have qualified for India’s premier engineering institutions. At that time there were about twenty-five students who had arrived there from different districts of Bihar. A few students were from adjoining states of Jharkhand and West Bengal. These are the two years batch of Rahmani-30 that is preparing for IIT-JEE of 2011.

Abhayanand, who goes by only one name, arrived unannounced and a class was organized just after the Asr prayer. He went over some Physics problems for about 45 minutes. Students came out to see him off and he offered some words to inspire his young and eager students. Talks again turned to Physics and he continued the instructions on the back of his official car. This was a rare and a welcome sight to see police officers contributing towards the future of young Muslim students.

ADGP Abhayanand told me that he enjoys teaching and is now associated with five such experiments. Most of the students of these five institutions qualified for IIT. For economically and educationally backward state of Bihar this is very good news. And more than news, it is a hope that now even poor but meritorious students can achieve success with a bit of help. In Bihar, Rahmani-30 has given a new direction to Muslim students anxiously waiting for announcements of entrance exams and results.

Rahmani-30

Successful students of this year’s exam have already indicated that they will teach their juniors and once finished with their education will work for the benefit of the community. It costs Rs. 80,000 per year for each student’s expenses. Students are given free board, lodge and instructions. All expenses are met by Rahmani Foundation.

Rahmani-30 is a beacon of hope for Bihari Muslims not only because of the help it provides to meritorious students but also because a new generation of Muslims is taking up interest in the community affairs. Though Abhayanand and Wali Rahmani are the public face of Rahmani-30, volunteer team behind this institution consists of young Muslims in their 30s. These have jobs but volunteer their time to make sure that wheel of this coaching keeps turning. They make decisions for the day to day running to organizing exams.

With the successful result of this year’s IIT-JEE, Rahmani-30 and people associated with it have proved that they mean business and that with focused and sustained effort nothing is impossible.

KANPUR: In the age of education-mafias and sky-rocketing education expenditures, comes a novel initiative! A city based educationist has come up

with good samaritan act by offering to meet a to z expenses of 35 students for IIT-JEE.

Mahesh Singh Chauhan, a prominent educationist has come forward with concept B-35 where B stands for Bhabha, the education group currently run by Chauhan and 35 is the number of students, they aim to teach and nurture for the prestigious engineering examination for IIT. Once selected for prestigious course, these children will not even have to pay any fees during their 4 years of B Tech. For four years, the cost of books, lodging and food of students will be beared by three supportive institutes of the Chauhan.

The source of inspiration of B-35 is Abhayanand, IPS officer from Bihar who runs Super-30 in Patna, a coaching centre for brilliant students from highly economically background and has been giving cent per results in IIT for past several years.

Talking to TOI, Mahesh Singh Chauhan said, "I will try to bring more students under his coaching programme later on. These 35 students will be selected after a test conducted on June 14 across several cities of UP- Lucknow, Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Jhansi, Allahabad and Varanasi."

Annual income of the family not exceeding more than Rs 60 thousand has been kept the criteria for choosing students.
